Você já leu Drácula, de Bram Stoker? Note que disse leu, e não assistiu, porque são duas coisas bem diferentes. Por exemplo, enquanto no livro você percebe a crítica que o autor fez ao choque entre duas culturas da época, a inglesa com sua racionalidade e avanços tecnológicos e a do Leste Europeu, supersticiosa, cheia de tradições e mistérios sobrenaturais, nos filmes a única preocupação aparente é mostrar caninos enormes que assustem os telespectadores.
Mas o que tem a ver Drácula com O Historiador? A resposta em uma só palavra é: Tudo. Elizabeth Kostova mescla o real Conde Vlad III, o Empalador, que reinou na Valáquia no século XV, com o personagem vampiresco criado por Stoker (também baseado em Vlad III). As comparações deixam dúvidas sobre quem seria mais cruel, se o personagem real ou o fictício. São relacionadas lendas e tradições locais da Bulgária, Romênia, Hungria, Turquia e até da Grécia referentes aos vampiros, bem como pesquisas históricas nesses países sobre o papel de Vlad Drácula, e os espaços em branco entre a realidade e a ficção são preenchidos com uma imaginação majestosa. Achei realmente impressionante Kostova conseguir imitar até o estilo de escrita de Stoker em vários aspectos, por exemplo, deixando o seu livro parecendo um reunido de correspondências (cartas, diários, bilhetes etc.) entre os personagens da trama.
A história conta como uma jovem de dezesseis anos encontra um livro antigo com uma figura de dragão na biblioteca de seu pai, em Amsterdã. A partir daí, a narração se desenvolve principalmente em três diferentes épocas: 1972, 1952 e 1930. As descrições de particularidades de uma cidade ou país conforme o ano narrado, com sua política, cultura, geografia e até seus problemas pertinentes nos fazem viajar no tempo. As descobertas feitas por personagens diferentes e em lugares e ocasiões diferentes envolvendo o mesmo mistério encaixam-se como peças num imenso quebra-cabeça, impossível ser completado por uma só pessoa. A saga da viagem em busca de um ente querido é repetida algumas vezes, talvez devido ser utilizada desde os clássicos gregos com sucesso.
Se você deseja ler O Historiador, recomendo antes a leitura de Drácula, não por ser essencial ao entendimento, mas para dar um colorido a mais em sua viajem. A obra é uma ficção histórica, um gênero já bastante divulgado por Dan Brown e Irving Yalom, por misturar fatos e pessoas reais à ficção. Mas poderia se encaixar perfeitamente em terror, pois em alguns trechos consegue fazer você ter arrepios ou pesadelos, mais até que os livros de Stephen King.

As in The Da Vinci Code, it will probably be used as a guide for readers some travelers. And this is not just coincidence that we find between Historian and The Da Vinci Code: the existence of a secret society, the tree lost a historical character and climate known to follow clues left in ancient books leave an impression of "déjà vu" for those who read both works.
The essential lesson of the book is how the evil men can be measured both through his literary works and their actions towards others.
